Five places to eat, all within a golf-cart ride - plus the detail that catches out most first-time visitors: the kitchen at Mango's closes at 6pm.

North Captiva has a handful of restaurants rather than a dining scene, and that catches people out on their first night. Hours shift with the season, and the kitchen you were counting on may close earlier than you expect. Here is what is actually on the island, and how to plan a week around it.

Mango's Pool Bar & Grill

At the Island Club. Poolside and casual - burgers, tacos, salads, pizza and club sandwiches. Open seven days a week, no reservations. The detail to remember: the kitchen closes at 6pm. If your boat lands late, Mango's is not your dinner.

Anchors Landing

Also at the Island Club, this is the island's waterfront dining room and the place for a proper sit-down dinner. It is known for Kentucky-style steaks.

Coconuts Tiki Bar

Dockside drinks, music, and the reliably good end to a beach day.

Over The Waterfront

At the Safety Harbor Club, and one of the few true over-the-water restaurants in Florida. Fresh seafood, steaks and pasta. Lunch runs Wednesday to Saturday, 11am to 2pm; dinner Saturday and Sunday, 5pm to 8pm. Reservations are required - text 239-689-9335.

Barnacles and Mainstay

Steps from the ferry landing, and part restaurant, part market, part community hub. Gulf-fresh catches and classic American plates.

Something cold

Island Market and Mango's Island Store both keep ice cream, along with coffee, snacks and sunscreen. On the island, that is the answer to a hot afternoon.

How to plan the week

Three habits make island dining painless. Call ahead, because hours move with the season. Book Over The Waterfront on the day you arrive, since it only serves a few sessions a week and needs a text reservation. And treat the 6pm kitchen close at Mango's as a fixed point in your first day rather than a surprise.

Most groups cook at least half the week

With sixteen people in the house, cooking is usually the default rather than the fallback. The kitchen at Dream Catcher has island seating, a full set of cookware, an oven and range, a microwave, a toaster, a coffee and tea maker, and a refrigerator and freezer with an ice maker. There is a BBQ grill outside.

Groceries can be arranged and waiting when you arrive, and a private chef can be booked for a night - both worth asking about when you inquire. Island Market delivers on-island, which is what makes cooking for a crowd here workable at all.

The short version

Plan one night out, one night in, and keep the rest flexible. Everything on the island is within a golf-cart ride, so changing your mind costs you ten minutes.
